Ironworkers Local 97 would like to invite High School students who are 16 years of age and older, who are interested in the trades, to participate in a 2-week Rebar Bootcamp this summer with the option of gaining employment!
What is an Ironworker and what will participants learn?
“Ironworkers install rebar or reinforcing steel and structural steel to create the skeleton of a building, bridge, dams, etc. All the concrete high rises out there have rebar grids or cages inside the concrete to give the building strength and shape. This is what we would like to teach the students to start. This bootcamp is made for new people who have never done rebar before so no need to worry as everyone will be at the same level. The instructor will teach everyone how to properly carry rebar, tie rebar, and build floor slabs, columns, and walls. We will also give the students safety training, which includes CSTS 2020, WHIMIS, and Fall Protection training.”
Details:
Dates:
July 10th to 21st, 2023.
Time and location:
The Rebar Bootcamp will run Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm at the Ironworkers Union Hall, 20135 115A Avenue, Maple Ridge. The students will need to be able to get here every day on time.
Students will get a 30-minute lunch and a 15-minute coffee break in the morning and afternoon. Students are encouraged to pack a lunch as there will not be time to go buy food
Requirements to participate
Steel toed boots and work clothes ( like jeans and long sleeve shirts). All other PPE will be provided for them. The bootcamp will be taught inside and outside the building, so they will need to dress for the weather in layers and bring their rain gear, if they have some
Benefits:
Provided with a tool belt
Will be sent out to work for the rest of the summer - The starting wage for those who complete the course will be $24.93 plus hourly vacation pay of $2.99; a total amount of $27.92 per hour.
Participants are covered under Work Safe BC
More benefits!
All grade 12 students who have graduated are welcome to continue working with us. If they like ironworking and wish to continue, Ironworker Local 97 will sponsor them for an apprenticeship.
All grade 11 students are encouraged to return to school to complete their classes. If they like ironworking and wish to continue, Ironworkers Local 97 will work with their Counsellors/Work Experience Teachers to possibly set up their first year of ironworking, The Ironworker Foundation Class, in their grade 12 year.
Considerations of employment
The location of their jobsites would depend on which company they are dispatched to and which site needs the most people. Students could be working anywhere in the lower mainland. The companies and the dispatcher will try to work with them, but may not be able to accommodate specific locations.
All interested students are asked to fill out the one page application and send it back to KC Newman at kc@ironworkerslocal97.com. -see your Counsellor or Work Experience Facilitator for the form.
**Counsellors or Parents, if you have any questions, please contact KC Newman.
