The Rotary Club -Adventure in Citizenship

The Adventure
Annually since 1951, Canadian youth have been coming
to Ottawa for Rotary Adventure in Citizenship (AIC), a
program created to help senior high school students gain
an understanding about the privileges and responsibilities
of Canadian citizenship. As guests of the Rotary Club
of Ottawa, participants learn about leadership and how
Canadian institutions operate through visits, meetings
and presentations by political leaders, senior officials and
many others. Not least, there is a lot of time for fun with the
200 student-participants from coast to coast to coast.
Eligibility
AIC is open to Canadian students and landed immigrants
ages 16-18 years, who are (or aspire to be) community
leaders.
Program Highlights
The AIC program evolves annually in response to Canada’s
changing political agenda. A typical schedule might include
a presentation by the Speaker of the House of Commons
and a tour of Parliament, meetings with Indigenous leaders
and community leaders, motivational speeches, attending
a Citizenship Ceremony, visiting the Canadian War
Museum, a tour of a local university, debates with experts
about current topics, plus a traditional French-Canadian
dinner, AIC student-directed talent show, and a DJ dance
party.
Accommodation and Meals

Local families provide bed and breakfast and ensure the
students are transported to and from each day’s program.
Meals are catered in a variety of styles such as brown bag,
buffet, banquet, and pizza. Food restrictions and allergies
can be accommodated.
There are always two or more participants placed with
each vetted host family. The hosts’ names, addresses
and phone numbers are sent to the students prior to their
departure for Ottawa.
Program Cost
Each student is sponsored by a local Rotary Club. This
club pays the student’s AIC registration fee plus all travel
costs to and from Ottawa. The Rotary Club of Ottawa is
responsible for participants’ accommodation, meals and
transportation while in Ottawa.
