NV REC: Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Opportunities

All students who are interested in volunteering with NVRec need to attend an orientation session before they begin. These are usually offered once a month but they are hosting 2 in September (I have asked for the possibility of 2 in October as well). Another tidbit of information is that the students need to keep looking at their email for a response from the NVREC once they apply - I would suggest to look everyday as the NVREC only waits for one-two days for student confirmation of volunteer offer before they move onto the next person on the list.

First session: Saturday, September 9th @12:30 pm - Cypress Room at Delbrook
Second session: Wednesday, Sept. 20th at 5:00 pm.

Volunteers have to rsvp as we have minimum and maximum numbers in order to run and for room capacity. To RSVP they can just email Meh directly below.

Rhizome Youth Growing/Gardening Mentorship with the Edible Garden Project

Would you like to learn how to grow fresh food and flowers for yourself and your community? Are you interested in exploring work in agriculture, ecosystem restoration, or farmers markets? Do you want to grow your skills in collaboration, communication, and entrepreneurship?

  • Rhizome will provide a rich and engaging long term learning opportunity for older youth who may be interested in farming and food growing.
  • We will be learning to plan, plant, maintain, and harvest crops together, while developing skills that will be useful beyond the mentorship program and into their own lives and future career goals.
  • Participants will learn a variety of elements of farming such as crop planning, soil science, seed saving, companion planting, ecosystem stewardship, collective decision making, and small business skills.
  • Participants will also receive a certificate of completion and letters of reference, enabling them to continue the work of building healthy and sustainable local community food systems that promote access to fresh food
  • You must be between 15 – 23 years old to be eligible for the Rhizome mentorship, and to be able to commit to approximately 5 hrs per week.
  • The mentorship will run from the end of May to end of Oct/middle of November with a flexible schedule for those returning to school in the fall.
  • Our mentorship will take place over three sites; Loutet Farm, Silver Harbour (near Lonsdale & 22nd), and a residential site near Loutet Farm. Youth will have the opportunity to work both independently and collaboratively depending on their comfort level and needs, with full team check-ins weekly.
