‘Helper’ Volunteer Position
Neighborli is a new online platform designed to build meaningful and impactful social
engagement with a focus on dealing with the challenges of a rapidly aging society. We
started as a research project at Capilano University and have blossomed into a Federal
Government funded initiative with Employment and Social Development Canada. For
more information, see article here: https://capilanou.ca/about-capu/get-to-knowus/
capsule-stories/articles/being-neighborli/
Our mission is to help older adults age in place comfortably and affordably through
providing companionship and help around the home. We accomplish this through
providing opportunities for students to build intergenerational communication skills,
make an impactful social connection with someone in your neighborhood who is feeling
isolated at this time, and foster empathy for older generations. This is a non-paid
volunteer position until the platform has gained traction resulting in a potential paid
opportunity in the near future.
Job Responsibilities
We are currently working in collaboration with the North Shore Community Resources,
Better at Home Program and North Shore Keep Well Society. The following activities
are some of the jobs you will be asked to help older adults with while abiding with the
latest Covid-19 guidelines:
- Grocery Pickup
- Prescription Pickup
- Virtual visit or iPhone lesson
- Happy Chat (Phone call)
- Other distanced/non-indoor activities: (e.g. garden help, taking away discards for
- donation or dump, taking garbage cans to the curb, cat litter boxes, errands, etc.)
- Verbal communication skills
- Compassionate
- Eager to help in the community
- An interest in future careers working with older adults or health care
- Complete an interview and background check
