North Vancouver Constituency Youth Council - Jonathan Wilkinson, MP The office of the Member of Parliament for North Vancouver would like to offer an opportunity for interested students to participate in Jonathan Wilkinson’s Constituency Youth Council.

With COVID-19, our council will go virtual; we will have many more possibilities than in the past to have elected officials and internationally recognized leaders and personalities contribute to student discussions of issues that really concern young people in this community. In this new virtual learning world, we feel that the potential for more young people to be more engaged in the democratic process is exponentially greater.

The Youth Council is a group of young people from ages 15 through 24, who provide non-partisan advice and input on issues of importance to them. Listening to young people about issues that matter to them is an important commitment of the government. Jonathan feels strongly that vibrant, young leaders and engaged citizens will rise to important tasks when given opportunities and mentoring.

Youth Council members will meet mostly online once a month to discuss issues that matter to their peers, their community, and their country. They will interact with each other outside of meetings to discuss ideas and upcoming activities, and to talk with their peers about issues that matter most to them. They will also engage with local and national organizations, meet virtually with policy makers and decision-makers like Cabinet Ministers, and may attend public events (with COVID-19 safety always in mind).

This is an opportunity for youth to engage in the political process and share their thoughts on ongoing issues and decisions made at the federal level. It also gives our elected representative a chance to better understand the concerns of youth in our community and to fully represent the residents of North Vancouver. Jonathan’s 2019/20 Council conducted a survey and produced a report on the effects of COVID-19 on youth mental health, helping to inform policy around best mental health supports for Canadian young people.

The North Vancouver Constituency Youth Council is open for applications on an ongoing basis this year; youth may apply on our website at any time beginning on September 1, 2020. The Constituency Youth Council is an inclusive and supportive environment, welcoming all young people living, working or studying in North Vancouver, between the ages of 15 and 24.
